Why Lazos de Agua?

The program’s mission is to transport water, sanitation and hygiene to vulnerable populations in the countries where we work. The development of a community begins with water and it is impossible to do without it.

Worldwide, 1 of every 3 people do not have access to safe drinking water and more than 50% of people do not have access to safe sanitation services. In Latin America, 240 million people do not have access to safe water and 490 million people lack adequate sanitation.

Why Latin America?

Lazos de Agua’s contributors identified the need in the region considering that most of them are present in Latin American countries. In the 5 countries where Lazos de Agua projects are being developed, water and/or sanitation coverage rates in rural areas are far below the urban level; that is why we focus on these areas without forgetting that rurality varies from one territory to another.

The countries in which we are present are Colombia in the cities of Tumaco and Quibdó; Mexico, in the state of Guanajuato; Nicaragua in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region; Guatemala in the department of Quiché; and Paraguay in the departments of Caaguazú, Concepción, Guairá, Itapúa, Paraguarí, San Pedro, Alto Paraná, Canindeyu and Cordillera.

Mexico and Paraguay:

The opportunity to work in both countries hand in hand with government programs, which are responsible for improving access to water and sanitation services through the construction or rehabilitation of the infrastructure.

Colombia, Guatemala and Nicaragua:

In these countries, there are high rates of people who do not have access to safe drinking water, communities that are in a state of vulnerability and where the impact affects mostly women and children.

In all the countries where we work, we apply the A-B-C Model for Sustainability™ and the Social Art for Behavior Change (SABC) approach, both from One Drop Foundation, based on human-centered design and diagnostics, and calling for a collective intelligence with our partners, the community and all the stakeholders involved.
